Brass Alloy Selection Guide: CZ121 vs CW614N and When to Use Each

March 1, 20258 min readAmit Shah

Selecting the right brass alloy is fundamental to component performance, and two alloys dominate precision brass manufacturing: CZ121 (CuZn39Pb3) and CW614N (CuZn39Pb3 to EN standard). Understanding their properties helps engineers and procurement teams make informed material decisions.

CZ121 is the traditional British Standard designation for free-cutting brass containing approximately 57% copper, 39% zinc, and 3% lead. The high lead content provides exceptional machinability — rated at 100 on the machinability index — making it ideal for high-speed CNC turning of complex threaded components, fittings, and valve bodies.

CW614N is the EN (European Norm) equivalent designation that has largely replaced CZ121 in international specifications. While the chemical composition is virtually identical, CW614N is specified to tighter tolerances under EN 12164 (bars) and EN 12165 (forgings), providing greater consistency in mechanical properties.

For applications requiring dezincification resistance in aggressive water conditions, CZ132 (DZR brass) or CW602N should be specified. These alloys contain arsenic additions that prevent selective zinc leaching, making them essential for potable water fittings in regions with corrosive water chemistry.

Lead-free alternatives like CW510L (CuZn42) are increasingly specified for drinking water applications in markets with strict lead content regulations (NSF/ANSI 372, EU Drinking Water Directive). While machinability is reduced, modern CNC technology and tooling have made lead-free brass commercially viable.

At BrassForge Industries, we maintain stock of CZ121, CW614N, CZ132 (DZR), and lead-free alloys, enabling us to match the optimal material to each application and regulatory requirement.
