Why Brass Remains the Gold Standard for Plumbing Components

January 15, 20255 min readAmit Shah

Brass has been the material of choice for plumbing components for centuries, and modern engineering has only reinforced its position. The unique combination of corrosion resistance, machinability, and antimicrobial properties makes brass alloys like CZ121 and CW614N ideal for water-contact applications.

Unlike plastic alternatives, brass fittings maintain their structural integrity under sustained pressure and temperature cycling. A well-manufactured brass compression fitting can deliver leak-free performance for 50+ years in potable water systems, far outlasting its initial cost premium.

The dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass alloys now available address historical concerns about zinc leaching in aggressive water conditions. Modern brass plumbing components meet stringent standards including BS EN 1254, NSF/ANSI 372, and WRAS approval for drinking water safety.

From a sustainability perspective, brass is 100% recyclable without loss of properties. The brass recycling industry recovers millions of tonnes annually, making brass plumbing components part of a truly circular economy. When specifying materials for critical plumbing infrastructure, brass delivers unmatched long-term value.
